1 year Old Dormant Vines
1 year old dormant vines have long been the standard in the grapevine industry. These cuttings are harvested in the winter and then placed into cold storage until they are ready to be processed. Then they are heat treated, chemically treated, and callused before being placed in the nursery. They will grow in the ground for a year, gaining a large root system. A year later, in early February, they are dug up from the nursery, trimmed, treated with fungicide and insecticide, and placed into cold storage until they are ready to be planted.
They can typically be planted about two weeks earlier than potted vines because it will take that long for the vines to come out of cold dormancy and for the buds to break. That gives you an extra two weeks for the roots to acclimate to the soil without the worry of a late frost. Place an order with me a year in advance, and you will get very high-quality reliable vines.
They also have the advantage of being more cost-effective to ship. We only ship dormant vines, so if you are unable to come to our nursery to pick up the material, this may be a good option for you. We sometimes have a few extras so ask about what is available. Orders are taken on a first come basis. A 50% deposit is required to secure your order.
